CESAR is a male GSD of excellent phenotype who comes from a strong pedigree with dogs who are producers of competitors in world competitions and producers of hard Police K9. Hard, strong working dogs from the former DDR (East Germany), Czechoslovakia, and West Germany.
CESAR’s Koer report says much about him:
Good medium size, medium stong, good pigment, good mask, dark eyes, normal withers. Firm back, good croup, could be more substantial. Good angulation in front. Very good in rear hind. Straight front. Steps absolutely correct in front and rear and shows good movement with effective rear drive and good front reach. Sure temperament. TSB Pronounced. Does Out Steady/Natural temperament.
CESAR has solid tracking skills, high ball drive, breath taking obedience and excellent protection skills with a grip that re-arranges the sleeve of the helper. CESAR excludes extreme confidence in any situation with a very clear head.
We find excellent dogs such as CAR z Kostolianskej cesty, CORDON An-Sat, FEDOR vom Arminius, NORBO Ben-Ju, and TITUS z Pohraniční stráže in CESAR's pedigree. While these are not all the excellent dogs we find in CESAR’s pedigree...it is the dogs I have focused on to display the true excellence of CESAR’s pedigree.

CAR z Kostolianskej cesty
SÚCHNO HPK 20322
CAR was from the 3rd Czech bloodline founded by KLODO vom Boxberg on his sire’s side via UTZ vom Haus Schütting and via CURT von Herzog Hedan via his dams side.
(KLODO vom Boxberg side note: In 1923 the Czechoslovakian Seiger was KLODO vom Boxberg. While only a few people, who were involved in the serious breeding of German Shepherds had heard of the results, Max von Stephanitz was fully aware. It had been bothering Max, and the breed wardens, that the dogs of Germany were becoming too short in length and too tall and because of this were losing their fluid movements. Max studied the results of that show and in 1925 with the German Seiger show about to take place he made a decision. After his decision was made Max (the Rittmeister) took his place in the ring and after several days of judging, made KLODO vom Boxberg the new Seiger of 1925.( While KLODO’s sire was from the favored SV show lines and of course ROLAND von Starkenburg, his dam’s pedigree has extreme resources to the HGH working dogs). This dog was to be used to mold the standard for the German Shepherd for generations to come in Europe as well as North America and issued in the "New Blood" as compared to the "Old Blood" that came before KLODO. KLODO was of slightly lower height , deeper and longer bodied, short in loin and with a fluid far-reaching gait, a model of structure, character and temperament.)
Between 1988 and 2006 CAR had 6 distinct progeny that competed 18 times in WUSV competition...arguably one of the best producers from East Europe, he was titled in Search and Rescue as well as IPO3.
Behind CAR’s sire DUX Agar we find resources back to strong DDR dogs through BOJAR vom Schotterhof who brought in resources to Sieger XITO vom Baruther Land (the #5 producing stud dog of the DDR). The 1969 DDR Seiger who sired 201 progeny of which 169 received a Kör rating with 86 going V rated.. There were NO other DDR sires who produced more "V" rated dogs than XITO.!! BOJAR also brings in resources to EX vom Riedstern (who was linebred on ALI von Gränert 3,4-3.) EX was the #15 producing stud dog of the DDR siring 146 progeny of which 128 received a Kör rating with 75 going V rated. There were only 3 other DDR sires who produced more V rated dogs than EX vom Riedstern. (from Werner Dalm, Die DDR-Sieger aus züchterischer Sicht page 150.)
ALI von Gränert was one of the four founding sires of the DDR bloodlines and was the #4 producing stud dog of the DDR siring 234 progeny of which 215 received a Kör rating with 43 going V rated. (from Werner Dalm, Die DDR-Sieger aus züchterischer Sicht page 150.) (There was no VA rating in East Germany...V rating was the highest awarded) ALI provides resources back to "old blood" through the dam of his sire Hardt von Bad Melle via Artus vom Wilmstor to JUNKER von Nassau. (The JUNKER von Nassau bloodline brings in HIGH ACTIVE AGGRESSION, absolute grip, courage, and steady nerve COUPLED WITH HIGH TRIGGER LEVELS, but as with the Nestor lines could also produce -SOME- dogs with low trigger thresholds, high sharpness and reactive aggression)
Ali's mother was Draga aus der Brigittenklause who was linebred on the very sharp dog NESTOR vom Wiegerfelsen also of the "Old Blood"!! NESTOR’s bloodline exemplifies good chest, good angulations, a squared appearance ( 4 legs of the same length) ,excellent trotting structure with forward motion coupled through a very, very strong back. NESTOR was known for producing progeny who were very sharp possessed low trigger levels and high reactive aggression.
Behind CAR’s dam Ceri Nemo we find Babeta Alcorn who married the excellent CLAUDIUS vom Hain bloodline(small to medium dogs who were stretched, dry muscle, dry bone, low withers, lack of chest, slab sides and a long muzzle with low forehead and little stop.)of her dam side to the ROLF vom Osnabrücker Land bloodline via ROLF’s son HARDT von Bad Melle via ALI von Gränert down through the 1963 DDR Sieger CONDOR vom Falkenwappen via his excellent son SEIGO aus der Espenstätte the sire of Babeta. SEIGO’s female line descends back through the "root source" female Lena von der Krone, HGH and finally through the "root blood" of Fanny Huendin (HGH) Abst.unbekannt, who was of pure HGH working Württemberg breed type.
The ROLF vom Osnabrücker Land bloodline was an SV showline bloodline that today is found behind the CANTO/QUANTO von der Wienerau bloodlines. The ROLF line was an SV Show Line, but it brought with it not only good conformation, but also good temperament. The ROLF line was the Show Line that was responsible for normalizing the Show Line/Mainline temperament issues after WWII. The dams line (Maja) descends back on MINNA. The CANTO and QUANTO cross brought together many lines to Berta vom Lorscher Sand that spoiled the temperament. Also, the ROLF line had a very desirable pronounced masculinity and good front shoulder angulations, but suffered from short front legs, short and steep croup as well as 'wet' muscle.
Also behind CAR’s dam we have resources to GIN vom Lierberg through CÄSAR vom Rulamanweg. This bloodline has a natural love for the work, a picture of tail held high, strong eye contact is maintained and a obedience routine that shows great team work. GIN was a great producer of excellent temperament, as was his sire VELLO z.d. Sieben-Faulen.
The primary importance of CAR here is that he was the sire to NORBO Ben-Ju.

CORDON was from the 2nd Czech bloodline founded by HETTEL Uckermark on his sire’s side.
(HETTEL Uckermark side note: "inherited more of his mother’s character, the Siegerin Gretel Uckermarck. Though Hettel himself was within the standard size, he was criticised for producing big, heavy-boned offspring. Gretel herself was an oversize, rather masculine bitch, inheriting her substance from the unknown Württemberg working ancestry on her dam’s side rather than from Beowolf" (from "The German Shepherd Dog" by Brian H. Wootton, pages 17-18) Hettel did possess the HGH title and sometimes, depending on the female he was bred to, could produce good to excellent working temperament.)
CORDON An-Sat, was considered to be one of the greatest producers of police dogs and was highly sought after for breeding in East Europe. His bites were natural and serious with a good jump to the decoy's sleeve and his barking was very real. When it came to tracking, CORDON was not a typical IPO dog, but more the Police K9 (that he was) faster but with a good nose......3 or 4 hour tracks gave him no problem.
CORDON’s sire’s line has resources to the CLAUDIUS vom Hain bloodline through Hera vom Hain via EX od Schmidtu. The CLAUDIUS vom Hain bloodline brings in desirable traits of high motivation and the love for the work, mid to high thresholds or triggers, high physical endurance required for working and the trait of natural aggression and purposeful fight drive.
We find all the resources of Babeta Alcorn (mentioned above under CAR z Kostolianskej cesty) through VILMAR z Marusky who was grandsire to CAR pod Molnosskou banou the sire of CORDON. Behind his sire CAR, we also find 3 resources to the NESTOR vom Wiegerfelsen bloodline (two of these resources coming through AJO Ja-Kra and one through Ajka z Vinodulu) and one resource via Ajka z Vinodulu to the ROLF vom Osnabrücker Land bloodline.
We have resources to the CLAUDIUS vom Hain bloodline through ERKO z Mestkeho polesi and 2 lines to CLAUDIUS vom Hain via ENNO vom Haus Schuöcker on CORDONs dams side. Behind Afra Troavyn we have resources to the ROLF vom Osnabrücker Land bloodline. Also through Afra we find resources to the dog considered the #1 founding sire of the DDR bloodlines ROLAND vom Teglerforst the 1949 DDR Seiger.
CORDON has resources to "root blood" of Old working bloodlines through the dams of his sires’ side via the Siegerin Elsa v. Schwaben who was the daughter of Fides vom Neckarursprung. Fides and her dam Ceres, and her dam Fanny all descending back on pure Württemberg resources, and are all HGH titled, except for Fides.

FEDOR vom Arminus
SZ 1592045
FEDOR is from the ROLF vom Osnabrücker Land bloodline. ROLF was of 'Old Conformation' lines that descends back on the 'favored' SV Show-Lines, on back to UTZ vom Haus Schütting.
(ROLF vom Osnabrücker Land side note: The Rolf line or the show dog line, descends back "directly over" KLODO vom Boxberg and therefore was not considered to be "Old blood". These dogs were not hard, tough and courageous dogs, and did not enjoy confrontation or combat with the man.) FEDOR was a showline dog that could work because of his "root blood" HGH bloodlines brought in through the dams in his pedigree.
A "VA" rated dog, FEDOR competed in the coveted Bundessieger-Zuchtschau, FEDOR sired 6 Bundessiegerprüfung participants. FEDOR's pedigree shows that he was lobenswert (praiseworthy) in his protection work... FEDOR has dogs such as VALET vom Busecker Schloss, ALF vom Nordfelson, KLODO aus der Eremitenklause and BODO vom Lierberg (Bernd’s brother/littermate and GIN’s brother via the "G" litter) via his dam Fee vom Weiherturchen in his pedigree.
His sire's dam, Ora vom Wiedenbrucker Land, also shows dogs such as SAM von der Schinklergrene, DOLF vom Lierberg and VEUS von der Starrenburg. A showline dog that could work, FEDOR has strong resources on both his sire’s dam side and his dams side to root blood HGH dogs. As CORDON An-Sat has resources to "root blood", FEDOR also has the same resources to "root blood" of Old working bloodlines through the dams of his sires’ side via the Siegerin Elsa v. Schwaben, as mentioned above with CORDON An-Sat.
FEDOR has "root blood" resources through his dam Fee vom Weihertürchen, via her dam, Anja vom Reststrauch. Both the sire, HERZOG von Adeloga and dam, Ussa vom Reststrauch, of Anja had resources to the excellent "root blood" via Cilla (Distelbruch), who’s dam Minka , was out of the dam Wachtel von Birken, HGH---SZ 188, DOB 1/28/1901. Wachtel von Birken was from the Birken Sheep Farms and had significant influence on the forming of the breed. Wachtel was one of the first crosses made in forming our breed as her sire was HORAND himself who of course was of 100% Thüringian breed type, and her dam was Selke von Birken, HGH who was from 100% Württemberg breed type.

NORBO Ben-Ju
SÚCHNO HPK 29325
NORBO was from the 4th Czech bloodline founded by UTZ vom Haus Schütting via Hussan vom Haus Schütting.
UTZ vom Haus Schütting was sired by KLODO vom Boxberg mentioned above. UTZ was the most influential son of KLODO. He was the 1929 German Seiger and the American and Canadian Champion in 1929. He was a "slightly long, under medium sized, firm backed dog with a long wither, good shoulder assembly and a short loin. Well angulated behind for the era." ( from " The German Shepherd Dog..A Genetic History of the Breed" by Malcolm B. Willis, , page 72.) "Utz stock, on the other hand, was to prove invaluable in the hands of a man who was to distinguish himself as probably the most successful breeder in the history of pedigree dogs, Dr Werner Funk of Hamburg, whose prefix, vom Haus Schütting, was to be carried by innumerable top winners of the period. He inbred continuously back to UTZ, who himself left only 177 progeny in Germany, and established a definite type that mirrored his influence: medium sized, substantial with very good upper arm angulation and forechest. He was the end product fo the most widely used sire line of the time: Horand--Beowolf–Roland–Hettel–Alex–Erich–Klodo. (from "The German Shepherd Dog" by Brian H. Wootton, page25)
NORBO had excellent retrieve and prey drive who imparted his excellent deep full mouth grip, hardness, courage and drives onto his progeny. NORBO was on the WUSV Team 3x's for SchH3 and 3x's for IPO3 before the age of 6. He won The International Working Stud Show in Bratislava in October of 2000.
NORBO was sire to the famous T. Ben-Ju litter which included Tea, Trixia and Tango Ben-Ju, all world competitors. His sire was Car z Kostolianskej cesty mentioned above.
With Chuna z Policia (the dam of NORBO ) we find resources to Sali von der Krone through the dams female bloodline via Mari von Grafrath fr.v.d. Krone. Sali was a "root blood" dog of Old working bloodlines who was from pure Thüringian (Krone) resources. From Sali we bring in sharpness, high physical energy and alertness, good hips, testicles that descend, good teeth with lack of under-bite or overbite, a lower incidence of allergies and short but thick coats.
As with CORDON and FEDOR above we also have Old working bloodlines through the dams of his NORBO’s sires side via the Siegerin Elsa v. Schwaben.

TITUS z Pohraniční stráže
CKS 564
TITUS was from the Czech 6th bloodline founded by UTZ vom Haus Schütting via Baron von den Deutschen Werken.
TITUS has several resources back to BERND vom Lierberg as well as ALI von Gränert .
The sire of TITUS , BERO von der Friedersdorfer Flur, brings in 4 resources to EX vom Riedstern who brings in ALI von Gränert as discussed with CAR z Kostolianskej cesty above. BERO also brings in 3 resources to Bernd vom Lierberg with one of the resources through his excellent son Pushkaß vom Haus Himpel via HELD vom Ritterberg as well as 1 resource each to CONDOR vom Falkenwappen via his excellent son SEIGO aus der Espenstätte via SEIGO’s daughter the Siegerin Burga vom Osterberg and 1 resource to Seiger XITO vom Baruther Land.
The dam of TITUS, Vera z Pohraniční stráže, was from the 4th Czech bloodline founded by UTZ vom Haus Schütting on her sire’s side. The sire of Vera, Nero z Vlad-Ku, brings in 2 resources to the bloodline founded by NESTOR vom Wiegerfelsen, 1 resource to GIN vom Lierberg via his son Cäsar vom Rulamanweg, as well as 1 resource to the 1964,1965, and 1966 DDR Seiger GREIF vom Felsenstein through his excellent son Logan Onyx. At the 1968 Bundessieger-Zuchtschau in Mannheim, Germany, LOGAN was awarded a "V" rating placing 24th in the show which at that time was unprecedented success for any dog originating from the Czech breeding station and of important note, LOGAN was a sable not the favored black and tan of the SV.
Vera’s dam, Verva z Pohraniční stráže, brings in 4 resources to EX vom Riedstern (mentioned above with CAR z Kostolianskej cesty) and 3 resources to DDR Seiger GREIF vom Felsenstein via the excellent VIKTOR von der Edelquelle. Verva also has 3 resources to SEIGO aus der Espenstätte , 1 resource to EX vom Riedstern, ALI von Gränert, GREIF vom Felsenstein and XITO vom Baruther Land through the excellent DDR sire Treu vom Schäferstolz.
Verva, also brings in resources from Old working bloodlines through the dams side via the Siegerin Elsa v. Schwaben. These are the same root bloodlines found with CORDON, FEDOR and NORBO above.
Titus was considered a producer of strong working service dogs for the Czech Border Patrol and the Slovakian Policia kennel. Certified as a Border Patrol dog, he had strong bone with stable and serious temperament, passing this onto his progeny with excellent grips and fight drive.

Regional Breed types of German Shepherd Dogs and "root blood"
I have discussed many times during this analysis, about dogs from Thüringia, and Württemberg. The working dogs, generally speaking, were breed types from Thüringia, Württemberg, Frankonia, Saxony and Swabia. Down through time, the Thüringian, Frankonia and Saxony dogs have become called the Thüringian dogs. These are regions in Germany where dogs had different traits and characteristics. The Thüringian Show-Dogs, Württemberg Sheep Dogs, Swabian Sheep dogs and the Swabian Service dogs were the primary regional breed types from whence the German Shepherd Dog was founded. Again, in general terms, these dogs came from hunting dogs, shepherd dogs, protection dogs and the herdsmens dogs. Often the herdsmens dogs were sometimes called "service dogs" because they were left on service (on duty) with the herds when resting or eating. Conversely, the conformation dogs used to develop the German Shepherd Dog came over what was called the "trophy dogs or fancy dogs". These show dogs came down over a particular line of dogs, whose heritage was said to be from Thüringia. These Thüringian dogs were of medium size with wolf-like expression, pointed ears, beautiful head and of slight, slender build with strong bones, strong and firm ligaments, good lean muscle and high energy. The Württemberg and Swabian herding and service dogs brought in the excellent working qualities via the females. "The Württemberg and Swabian Sheep dogs were of good medium to upper medium size, possessed excellent temperament, excellent physical and mental stamina, high intelligence, and a true love for the work. They also possessed admirable courage for man work. The Swabian service dogs were very tall, large boned and possessed pronounced courage for the man work as well as the ability to perform many / various working tasks (these are the dogs that brought the ability to multitask to our breed)."( as quoted from Bruce Brisson GSD-Euro list message 24770.) Where the Thüringian dogs had wolf-like pricked ears that stood upright, the Württemberg dogs had blockier bodies with floppy ears.
Footnote: I want to personally thank one of my mentors, Bruce Brisson. Without Bruce's patient editorial time and his help in learning about these dogs, bloodlines, traits and characteristics as well as how to research a pedigree this would not have been possible to write.
